Go forth…

Tonight we’re seeing Whitley. Which is pretty exciting. Whitley has been one of my favourite singers since about four years ago when I saw him with Old Man River at Spectrum. It totally blew my mind, he’s amazing live, especially in a tiny intimate space doing it acoustic (of course, it helps he’s pretty darn good looking). Clearly, I thought, its been too long since our last encounter! But now he’s announced he could be giving up music FOREVER and moving overseas for a few years. As you can imagine, I am distraught! Especially when you find you’re onto a good thing, with even better cover art! You can imagine my delight when “The Submarine” came out a few years back featuring Beci Orpin’s artwork on the Album cover and inside sleeve. Sigh. Two of my favourite things which certainly belong together, just like Washington featuring on his latest album, surely too good to be true. Tonight I will attempt to console myself with some band merch featuring something pretty, as it might be a long wait for the next album. Kx

We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo….

Well, technically we’ve already been. We were on a mission to see the baby hippo that was born a few weeks ago…

hippoBut alas, due to ridiculously confusing Zoo signage we spent the morning waiting around for a baby that never came. Anyway here are some of the funny animals I snapped throughout the day.

devils

Don’t think I’m the only one who would find this a little disturbing…

elephants

The other reason we went to the zoo. The famous baby elephant! Mr Shuffles. He was so cheeky and adorable, we watched him for a long time.

frog

This little guy was hillarious.

highfive

high five!

meerkat1Ahh meerkats. The cutest things we saw all day (except the TINY feathertail gliders which were WAY to quick to catch on film, SO want one now). I only wish is that we had sloths, owls and deers at the zoos here! Kx

Plating Up

My recently “acquired” plates. I’ve realized that Mums are good for things like holding onto a lot of old stuff until you need it. I’d forgotten we’d purchased some of these fantastic plates at op-shops years ago, obviously one of those moments where you think “that’s surely too good to leave here for $1″ and thankgod we did. How great is the art-deco-ish seagull plate (and the best thing is I have a whole set of them)! I also picked up this great old mother hubbard plate at this weird little place on enmore road, which I have no idea what I’ll do with, but I love it. Now i’m just waiting for inspiration to come. Planter Collection

I woke up today and decided I should share my little collection of ceramic planters, some recently acquired (thanks mum!) or op-shopped. They are actually a whole lot more usable than most of my collections and I actually found myself looking for things to fill them with.

Then today, just after I’d taken these photos, I found another planter at salvos! This one actually has a music box inside that plays a tune and the little wheel turns around! Can you believe this was only $2! Kx

You are feeling very sleepy…

juno1Apparently you can do this to chickens too. But we only had a bunny handy. Kx

Baked Goodness

pastries

Schwartz Bakery was the highlight of our trip to the Blue Mountains last weekend and the main reason my boy was so willing to come, even when I explained I would be dragged him through antique centres and op shops all day. They do the most amazing traditional German pretzels and sour cherry crumble. The chocolate pretzel on the left was actually pretty tasteless considering how amazing it looked! But if you’re ever in the area you should really check it out, especially because the op shops in the Blue Mountains are completely scoured and the antiques shops didn’t even have one Bambi between them. Thank god for etsy! Kx

It’s moments like this…

where working in a shop like made590 really comes in handy. This bunny lamp is quite possibly the best product I’ve ever purchased from made and I think i’m in love. The greatest thing is, if bunnies are not your thing there is also a squirrel, toadstool or duck to choose from. You can see them here. They’re pretty amazing really, and what more could you want than the warm glow of a bunny to keep you company (for the record, a real one makes a great substitute). Kx

New Illustrated Plates

I’ve got a whole bunch of new illustrated vintage plates up in my etsy store The Storybook Rabbit. I’ve been playing around with transfer decals and these plates are my favourites so far, I’ve even kept a few for my wall. Kx

Colour Me Happy

Last week I was lucky enough to take part in a week long watercolour course with the lovely John Wells at SCA. His classes were very relaxed and despite the fact I was painting vintage bambis and pet bunnies (this was something everyone was very curious about, and for the record: No, I don’t have any kids, I JUST LIKE ANIMALS!) when all the other ladies were painting far- away holiday destinations and daisy fields, he did a great job feigning an interest in my pastel coloured creations. I have dabbled in painting before but doing something like this is a great way to learn a proper technique and pick up little tips and tricks from the people around you. Here is a few of my completed projects from last week. Kx

A huge thankyou to Petina at I like you for her lovely words about my work and the interview she posted on her blog last week. You can read it and see more pictures of my house and collections here. Incase you’ve never been to I like You in Melbourne, you should! The shop is filled with all sorts of great things and Petina has been a big Made By White supporter since the very beginning. And also a huge goodluck and bon voyage to Petina, who’s off to be inspired in New York and other exotic destinations, something most of us only dream about and are rarely brave enough to do! Click the link and read all about it here. Kx
