Quince Season

28 April 2010

On the weekend we were pretty excited to discover quinces are in season! I was excited mostly because since I met my boy I’d heard a lot about how amazing quinces are and considering I’ve never seen or tasted them other than in paste form this sounded pretty good to me! Also Trev is pretty clever in the kitchen so whenever he speaks about something he likes to cook I know it’ll be good regardless!

This is what the looked like before we baked them. They are kind of like really hard giant yellow apples. We combined cinnamon sticks, vanilla bean paste, lemon juice, water and brown sugar in a baking pan and basically just slow cooked them under foil for 2 and half hours.

And this is the amazing colour they went in the process!

And this was the finished product! I’ve gotta say they totally beat apple and rhubarb and would make an amazing crumble. And they turned out perfectly, unlike our Masterchef Gnocchi which was a giant mashed potatoey mess, worse than when most of the dud contestants cooked it. Despite this, it still tasted pretty good! The Storybook Rabbit Shop

27 April 2010

Here is a bit of side project I’ve been working on called The Storybook Rabbit. It’s a small selection of bunny (and other animal) themed goodies starting with the vintage hand drawn plates I’ve been working away at. I had lots of fun photographing them (with help from Lynds and Ben!) and making it all look pretty. And there will be new things added soon! Kx

Why our mum is the BEST!

junovestskullvest

Because she can knit like you wouldn’t believe! These are the vests she made us last week! Clearly, mine is the one with the Juno’s on it! And Lynds got this great mexican sugar skull one. If you’re lucky you might be able to snap up something knitted by her from our stall at the next Finders Keepers which is VERY soon! Otherwise you can also have a look at her etsy store! Kx

Grab your capes and bonnets!

21 April 2010

Here are a few of my favourite ceramic animals, all dressed up with nowhere to go. Though they will make more appearances shortly, just because they are too cute to keep a secret! Kx

A very good friend of ours Mechelle B is having her first solo exhibition at Kinokuniya Gallery and the opening is this Saturday at 2pm!!

Entitled  “Hairy Tales”- it is a collection of portraits including watercolour paintings, drawings, zines, hand-painted vintage crockery and laser etched brooches. All works are for sale. With a bit of luck there will also be cake and there is sure to be lots of fun!

We have even collaborated with Mechelle on some wooden laser cut brooches (above) that are SO SO cute.

If you can’t make it on Saturday the exhibition continues until 27th April.

Facebook invite is here!

See you there!!

Micmacs

On the weekend we watched Micmacs, the latest offering from director of Amelie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet. This movie is so cute and clever! I loved it. Fans of Amelie, City of Lost Children and Delicatessen are sure to like it as much as I did and despite the story actually being about arms dealers and the destruction and death caused by war, this movie is just so pretty! Autumn Vintage

9 April 2010

Here are some of my latest vintage finds! I seem to be going through an Autumn phase, everything Ive picked up recently has been Autumn coloured!

This amazing deer plater is so funny, he is kind of a cross between a deer and a giraffe. I think he’s probably made from a vintage mould but looks more likely to be someone’s pottery class attempt! I still love him and couldn’t leave him behind.

I bought this boston terrier from an old lady at the dodgy markets in Culburra over the weekend.

I found this cute piggy planter from Salvos yesterday! Isn’t he great!

These beautiful plates seem to be some old ladies’ collection that got donated away! They all kind of match and I found them all in the same op-shop. I love these colours together.

These tea towels aren’t vintage, but they were recently acquired and very Autumny! My friend Gabby brought me the owl one from New York and I LOVE IT! The tree one I got at an op-shop and lastly the “Right on!” tea towel was actually a christmas present from Christina that I’ve yet to use because I love it too much to dirty it! It’s from To Dry For, which I also love! Happy Autumn! Kx

South for the Winter

8 April 2010

So last weekend we went down to the south coast the get away from Sydney and I thought I’d share a few of my favourite things about being there. Despite the fact that it can normally be a little boring down there (especially when it rains practically all bloody weekend!) we found some great stuff to do and cute places to go.

cuckoowallThe Cuckoo Clock shop in the main street of Berry is a must see! It has SO much great stuff! I wanted one of everything (especially all the miniature animals for your clocks!) But settled for these little deers for my collection.

donuts

Also while you’re in Berry be sure to stop and get some donuts from the famous Hot Donut Van! They are awesome and im sure, incredibly bad for you.

We went back to Berry for their “sunday markets” and I saw some of the weirdest things made by some of the strangest people on the planet. These were my two favourites. The Alice in Wonderland high chair was actually kind of cool, but next to the posessed baby pillow, who could choose?

guineas

bunnyNext to the weird product stalls was one of those kiddy farms (the petting zoo type, not the ones where they breed children) and I couldn’t help but take some photos of these aborable baby guinea pigs (which kind of looked a little too small to be away from mum!) and bunnies! It made me wish I’d taken juno along! But really, I do hate they are still allowed to have these things, the people running it were such bogans and I ended up really sad the animals had to go home with them.

onewiseowl1

onewiseowl2This is another great place to stop if you’re ever in the area. One Wise Owl is part of the “Jindy Andy Mill” group of shops right near Callala Bay and it is really cute! It’s all about sustainable eco-friendly products and they had some really great things there, especially for kids. We stopped in for a while and were pleasantly surprised to find they also do good coffee! Next door to them is a scrapbooking superstore combined with a miniature shop! It’s like heaven, even though I don’t own a dollhouse or scrapbook.

oldshedThe other thing I really like about the south coast is that people are kind of stuck in a bit of a time warp, and sometimes its for the better, like this pretty green shed which I stopped to take a photo of on the way home. It has obviously been this way for quite some time! But it’s so great. I love it. and now I want a wall that colour. Kx

I was a winner at the post office today!

7 April 2010

I’m usually a looser at the post office – bills, bank statements, or optass bills for the women who owed my PO Box 3 years ago! Dam you optus!!

Today I went up to the post office and just look at what was waiting for me! These FANTASTIC day of the dead skull bunting that I order from my new favourite Etsy store last week… winner indeed! These 2 sets of funny felt skulls were made to order and came SO quickly (from the US)  – super fast and friendly service, well made and just plain FAB! I haven’t found the perfect place for it yet but until then it’s going to live on our bedroom door, Thank you  RawBoneStudio you have made my day :) Lx

Dinosaur Party!

6 April 2010

Our little nephew Toby is turning 3 in a few weeks and has decided he wants a dinosaur party, I wasn’t really happy about the whole dinosaur theme but after seeing Kells awesome dinosaur she drew for the invites I think it’s going to be great!! We made these laser cut paper invitations and matching envelope to send out to everyone. Next we need to help out the decoration! Lx
